Time for an update again.

Well a route, subject to a test drive this summer when our mountain roads open up, has been devised and luckily (perhaps no real surprise) the hotels we need to use all have space.

Just waiting for the last night hotel to get back to me on a better price.

So route and B&B sorted

Vehicles, proving a tad harder to get a good price for you all, but I’m hopeful probably with Arctic Trucks, much newer, better presented and reliable but LR are available!

We have an offer to provide event clothing from the same supply as before. I think there will be a cost I really can’t see a fellow Yorkshire man giving it free.

Talking of money, I have been offered commission on the hotels and car hire, so I have instructed them to take off the commission from the unit price, or give it to KRABB. www.KRABB.is  is Iceland’s equivalent to Macmillan. The only money I will handle is yours and used for the event costs. Accounts will be available as we go along.

I am waiting for my second TEAMS meeting with Macmillan when we should get the top level approval to use ‘Mac’. Once that is agreed we will reveal the event logo. Created from an idea of mine by my friend Stephen in Yorkshire, if you are a keen early Discovery owner you will know his father Roy Preston.

I plan to open the application for entry 1 year ahead, this August, with an initial deposit required by 1st November. This deposit will be used to secure the various hotels and car hire, so sadly not sat earning in an account somewhere. A second deposit level by the closing date in March. Any entries after March may not get the benefit of the secured rates, as these will have been secured and numbers agreed by these two deposits. It is only fair on the hotels and other suppliers.

Just to clarify one question asked, I believe the early Macs’ only allowed 2 per team, I have relaxed this rule so families can come or your best mates, still just one team per vehicle.

Yes, I know you are all asking what is the final fee? I still don’t know exactly and if I start to estimate on current quotes I could be wrong. So the final entry fee will be announced when the entries open, certainly not after. Though I would suggest we all factor in a 10%  increase just in case.

There is another event I am involved with here in Iceland, the weekend before, well if it happens, we have tried to run one many times before. This is the Icelandic Hill Rally a 4×4 stage rally with 250k of competitive stage, with one stage 35k long (we could easily do 135). So if you want to extend your holiday and help we would welcome you. BUT then you could extend the other way, stay a week later and watch Rally Reykjavik. In my opinion a poor relative of the earlier events that brought Frances and I here in the first place. This later week also happens to be culture week so Gay Pride and so much more.

Well that is my update for now. As always any questions please just ask. ian@mac-ice.co.uk or use the FB page https://www.facebook.com/groups/738322826909699/?ref=bookmarks

Hello

9th June 2020

Copy from FaceBook, a simply clarification of what Mac-Ice is and is Not.
The Mac-Ice is a legacy event in memory of Selwyn Kendrick. He ran the Mac 4×4 Challenge. An MSA scatter with route planning, plotting, clue discovery treasure hunt. It was a marathon 3 day event with off road section on private estates. It had a time element but not speed.
Mac-Ice is similar but no time or speed element. Does that help.
By the way. Someone asked if it was a stage rally thing. No but if at least 12 want one we can do that as well. Better if road legal vehicles or French event type. He has a FB page which I’ll find for you.

Time to update you on the progress so far 26 May 2021

  • 39 people have carried out the survey 100% for a another Mac 4×4 type challenge
  • 53% for Macmillan charity 31% for both NHS and Macmillan
  • 6% No charity
  • Remainder are not sure
  • 87% for Iceland 13% for UK
  • Majority are for August September a few for early in the year – think winter.

A tentative date has been set and used to get prices back from car hire and hotels. The date is 12 – 15th August 2021 (Thursday to Sunday)

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel room prices range from Viking Village (based near us) and the Grand Hotel in Reykjavik, the only two out of 20 and some of that 20 where head offices. But they act as a frame for top and bottom price.

Grand 29000 ISK per room, includes breakfast

Viking 19500 ISK for double/twin, A Viking house for 5 is  26300 ISK for 2 plus 6800 ISK for each extra person, includes breakfast but a short drive to hotel.

VEHICLES

I have prices for 4×4 rental and yes you will need a 4×4.

Arctic Trucks Nissan or Toyota, 80000 ISK per day (these are the guys that worked on the Top Gear Pole Challenge vehicles). New or almost new vehicles

ISAK 52300 ISK per day. Typically Td5 or Puma 110 Defender, a few years old now.

SHIPPING

Via Samskip, they gave the lower quote, vehicles ship from HULL not Immingham. Return shipping, and of course you can extend to include your own holiday.
1450 EURO or about 221000 ISK

NOTE, hiring or shipping is almost equal cost. Both have logistics costs of course, going to port twice. Or adding an extra day to ease your extra time in Iceland. I (we) can supply logistic from airport and to dock side, etc..

EVENT

  • I have made contact with Macmillan and we are to have a Microsoft Teams chat but they are very happy. Not much fund raising happening at the moment.
  • Via my friend Chris, I know that Selwyn’s family are happy with the idea of a memorial event.
  • I have support, from the software company that the event will be handled via. They are offering a reduced per team fee. Don’t worry there will still be some plotting but a roamer may not be of any use (we are not OS maps!)

FUTURE

It would be quite helpful to have an idea of what sort of numbers we have to plan for. I’m thinking 45 maximum but not sure we will achieve that.

Yes I would still do the event for under 10 but maybe not with the software approach. Some prices might rise but I think I could work this end to match.

So please do complete the general Interest form available on the website, mac-ice.co.uk

NOW a CAVAET

Isn’t there always one!  These prices are issued a year ahead, with no crystal ball on the Covid19 thing, or indeed fuel prices etc., so please budget an allowance, maybe 10%.

That is all I have for now. Just email any question and please do send me ideas or wishes.

I will put this on the website as well

Ian
